【Origins】
Eijuin Temple was founded sometime before 1642, Togawa Michiyasu, Niwase feudal lord from Bitchu province, took refuge with Nichion Shonin, the 16th Chief Abbot of Honmonji Temple. And he donated his land 5,000 tsubo (≒16,500㎡) in Edo for Nichion Shonin’s retreat place.
The Buddhist temple was completed by Nitto Shonin, the 17th Chief Abbot of Honmonji Temple, a disciple of Nichion Shonin. At first, it was called Renjoin because it was related to the Buddhist name of Nitto Shonin. Later, Hoshinin, the granddaughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, took refuge in this temple. She changed the name of the temple to Eijuin Temple. She passed away in 1708. Hoshinin’s grave is called “Manryozuka tomb.”

* 1 manryo yen is about 1 billion yen (current money).
The cost of constructing this tomb was so expensive. Therefore, it is called “Manryozuka tomb.”

【A brief explanation of Nichiren Shonin and Ikegami 】

Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282) was a priest in the mid-Kamakura period and founder of the Nichiren Shu of Buddhism. “Shonin” means a “reverend priest.”
Nichiren Shu is a Buddhist Order that was founded more than 750 years ago. “Shu” simply means “Order.”
Nichiren Shonin founded Ikegami Honmonji Temple just before his death in October of 1282 at the request of Ikegami Munenaka, a wealthy feudal load and faithful follower.
